You can just disable the haldaemon service, if you don't need it running. 
That may also affect automatic network and power functions, but that may 
not be a problem in your case.

I'm trying to figure out how to stop the hal-addon-stor process from 
running
all the time on a VM that I've got.  I've got one virtual DVD drive, but 
it
was used for install, and probably won't ever be used for anything else.
The system is pretty much idle right now, and the top CPU user is
hal-addon-stor.  I've tried hal-disable-polling, but it doesn't appear as
though it's available in CentOS 5.4.  Anyone have any suggestions?
