Get a toll-free number -- it can be the last phone number change you ever undertake, even if you move, give up cell phones, move to Google Voice, move from Google Voice, etc. And since you get to pick your number there's a moderate chance you can keep your current 7-digit phone number and just switch area codes, or choose some mnemonic that identifies you.

You have to pay for incoming calls, but unless you're on the phone a lot it's a pretty minimal cost (I pay something like $0.029/minute) for a versatile redirect service -- you can port among a variety of traditional and VoIP providers with no hassle and can ring through to any number if you can't or don't want to port directly to your current phone provider.

Plus toll-free numbers are automatically excluded from many telemarking lists.
