I will most likely get flamed for this, but the best documentation I found for NX servers was on the Ubuntu forums.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FreeNX
I use freenx to get in to my 'headless' server.

I've been intrigued by the FreeNX advertising, but haven't been successful at getting a share set up. Documentation is quite ambiguous. One of the local UG members swears by it, and I've been trying to get more info from him.

you should also check out FreeNX. it's an open-source implementation of
nomachine's NX protocol, which is similar in functionality to M$'s
remote desktop. it tunnels over ssh automatically.
the only concern could be that there isn't an open-source client for
windows, but you can use the free nomachine client.
