you should also check out FreeNX.  it's an open-source implementation of 
nomachine's NX protocol, which is similar in functionality to M$'s 
remote desktop.  it tunnels over ssh automatically.

the only concern could be that there isn't an open-source client for 
windows, but you can use the free nomachine client.
