I have used Midwest Electronic Recovery:

At least here in Ames, Best Buy will take monitors...it does cost, I think, and they are limited to 2 per family per day or something like that. They also take computers. If you have lots of stuff, though, I would go to Midwest Electronic Recovery. I think there are also other, similar facilities in the Des Moines ares now.

I heard but have not verified Best Buy will recycle some electronics. They charge you like $10 and then give you $10 store credit is what I heard. Maybe their website can verify.
EmbarkIT had occasionally had a recycling day with discounted recycling. 1-800-GOT-JUNK will come and remove but it is not cheap. It may be less expensive if the equipment still works.
