We know that, of all storage media, papyrus and stone last the longest.
How long do you need to archive your data?

I was looking for a good way to archive some photos and movies. Optical
media seems to be the most convenient, but rumor has it that Cd's/DVD's
tend to degrade and fail after 5 years. Has anyone actually seen this
in practice? I've got some data CD's and DVD's that I burnt on generic
media 7 years ago and they are ok.
At the moment, an external usb drive appears to be the choice.
