These may be things you already know:
You might want to try using the Ubuntu desktop alternate install. It installs with a command line, and will sometimes work where the GUI install will not.
Also, at the CD boot screen press f4 and you can change installation type. You can choose a graphics-safe install which sometimes works better on laptops until you get the base system loaded.
I've had issues with some Ubuntu installs myself lately and found Debian will work where Ubuntu doesn't seem to - at least at first.
