[Cialug] Sata Spindown problem

Running ubuntu (mythbuntu) 8.10 I'm having an issue where after a time I
believe my drive is spinning down and "sleeping." When I bring the system
back up I don't seem to have a problem with / (ext3) but /var/lib is xfs
(don't know why...) and it won't come back up.  This blocks out my ability
to run almost any command including sudo!  Is there any way to get around
this? (i.e. no spindown, switch from xfs to somthing else, or ???)
