I use snmptrapd to do monitoring of my two tape libraries. 
I didn't do much with snmptrapd itself, just set it up to
basically take every trap it gets and dump it to a script
(which gets lines of key/value pairs) and decide there what
to do.

The hardest part will probably be, in my guess, getting MIBs
installed and deciphering what the hell they actually mean....
At least, it was for me.
