Depends,
If they are AC type detectors, they are not made to wire to a panel. They
usually have one signal wire that that opens a relay on additional detectors
to trigger the sounder on the additional alarms. I have not run across many
installs that are actually wired with the signal line.
If you take it of the mount, you should have your white and black connected
along with the ground. If there is a reed wire that is hooked up, it is
normally your signal line. If it is deadheaded in the box, it has not been
run.
If they are DC, there will be a 4 or 6 wire in to the smoke detector, 2
carry power, they other two are used to connect to the NC or NO connection
depending on the type of detector. Most heat detectors are just wired with 2
wires. They are either a NC or NO connection to the panel.

Subject: [Cialug] OT: Alarm systems
Anyone familiar with household alarm systems? (I know at least one person
is)
In houses that are wired or pre-wired for Alarms, the smoke detectors are
often wired too. Are they wired just for power or are they wired with
signal cable to so that they can connect to the alarm system as well? Mine
seem to be wired for power but I haven't taken a multimeter too them yet.
Further, would a signal cable be an on-off type of thing or would there
actually some kind of coded digital or analog signal on the smoke detectors?
I suppose it could depend on the brand and price of the smoke detectors?
