Wait, there is an easier way... Just use a different DNS server.
Maybe you've tried this, there was discussion of opendns in a previous
email.
I assume you're using GNOME. When at home, using wifi (go ahead and
put the router and everything back the way you like it) either right
click your wireless network icon and choose Edit Connections or go to
System -> Preferences -> Network Connections.
Switch to the wireless tab
Double click your home network
In the new pop-up window click the IPv4 settings tab
Change "Method" to Automotic (Addresses only)
in the DNS servers text field put the following exactly as shown below:
208.67.222.222, 208.67.222.220
Then hit "OK" and then on the remaining window hit "Close"
This will set your computer to use Open DNS which is a free dns
service. For testing purposes it should be fine, if you're
uncomfortable with the compromises that you have to make when using
open dns ensure you revert back to your previous settings after you've
finished testing.
Now ping a domain name. Does it work OK? Are things normal?
