I think thats worst case. I'm pretty sure since 8.04 is LTS you can just do:
# sudo update-manager -c -d
(Assuming you have adesktop env installed)
If that doesn't work you can use:
sudo do-release-upgrade to go the 8.04 > 8.10 > 9.04 path.
