To be fair, some of that $40 price difference can be attributed to having half the disk space as the XP equivalent. (4GB Ubuntu compared to 8GB XP)

Subject: [Cialug] Dell's Ubuntu Netbook
Ok, I've been active in Dell's Ideastorm community, which is dominated by Linux evangelists.
Also, if you are a netbook fan, Dell has an Inspiron Mini 9 that looks a lot like the other netbooks out there from MSI, Acer, Asus. The big news is that they now offer Ubuntu on it as a "primary" option, and not hidden off in a deep, dark corner in the bowels of Dell.com, where the rest of Dell's Ubuntu offereings are hiding.
They went further, and made the Ubuntu version $40 cheaper than the XP version across the board. This is a huge step forward. Previously, OEMs have been able to "give away" Windows because of all the kickbacks they get from the crapware vendors. A windows licence might cost dell $20, but then they get $25 from the crapware vendors to load up your shiney new PC with a bunch of garbage you don't want or need.
I'm very happy seeing the Ubuntu Mini 9's $40 less than equivilant XP models. If you are looking for a netbook with Linux, and want to reward a company for doing the right thing in supporting Linux as a primary option on main-stream computers, please check out Dell's Mini 9

Wow, an Ubuntu computer FEATURED on the hope page of Dell.com. What's the world coming to? *looks out the window for flying pigs*
