Another use is for mentoring new developers who you may not trust with commit access yet. We're doing this for Google Summer of Code students this year.

Exactly, and hits the point of the thread. Few busineses benefit this
mess of changes all over the place with sketchy backups, not reliably
pulling in everyone else's work, etc?
git is useful where your team needs to pull in and modify code from
another site and then maintain those changes indefinitely without
pushing them back to the main server.
It could be useful in extremely large corporations where you want to
bring down core modules into your department and incorporate them into a
product, but it's not for the average run-of-the-mill developer shop IMHO.
