I would recommend a USB or Firewire hard drive would be better as you
could plug the drive into any system not just the one with the hot
pluggable drive bay.

You should also take into consideration how much data you are going to
backup.   How fast you can write to the USB/Firewire.  Finally, you need
to determine how long an acceptable backup window is.  

This will help you figure out if a USB drive or a Firewire drive would
be adequate for the task.
