I've run nagios for years. It sucks, but is just good enough not to
replace. Any changes either require lots of clicking in the web UI
(which will be lost on nagios restart) or editing perl data structures
in the config files. It doesn't scale very well either.

I'd suggest looking at Munin: http://munin.projects.linpro.no/
