[Cialug] OT: DVD drive problem

Check the BIOS settings, sometime you can select DMA or PIO mode (or
auto) there too.
Windows may be happy to change BIOS settings without asking you... which
is really nice if you dual-boot in to linux, and suddenly your disk
access is really slow.
As the WinHLP article you found mentions... it can be a sign of a
failing drive.
