Simple guide to get you through the web authentication part of Josh's
suggestion, assuming you are using Apache and prefer to let it handle
the auth.over pushing it back to php.  Apache will pass the
authenticated user as a ENV variable to your application, be it a cgi,
ruby, php, etc...
