Dan, thanks for the Mandriva power pack suggestion.  I've been using PortableApps on my thumbdrive, but I think it's Windows based, although some of the app's are crossplatform.

Todd, No I meant various flavors of linux, but the NIXOS sounds interesting.

Mandriva power pack edition has no problems with my cf/sd cards, usb thumb
drive or ipod. It works with the a,b,g, intel card in my Toshiba just fine.

On the software side of things you might want to try
http://portableapps.com/ I think some one on this list suggested this a
while back. Just for grins and giggles I installed it(under window$) on my
60gb ipod video and it worked. It works ok as long it's a usb 2.0 device. I
don't think you'll be able to do everything you want to do, but give a try
anyway. Hope this helps.

NixOS is a Linux distribution based on Nix, a purely functional
package management system. NixOS is an experiment to see if we can
build an operating system in which software packages, configuration
files, boot scripts and the like are all managaed in a purely
functional way, that is, they are all built by deterministic functions
and they never change after they have been built. Such an operating
system should have all the nice characteristics that the Nix package
manager has:

== The entire system — kernel, system services, configuration files,
etc. — is built by a Nix expression in a deterministic and repeatable
