Unfortunately, the mouseemu command that seemed to be the main answer 
doesn't work. It works on iBooks and Powerbooks, but has not been 
updated for the new Intel machines. When i installed mouseemu it did 
not have the advertised effect and broke the keyboard in mysterious 
ways (the caps lock & num lock lights wouldn't come on, and the Fn key 
combinations for controlling brightness, volume, etc. stopped working). 
Fortunately killing mouseemu returned the keyboard to its normal state.

I'll keep looking for a solution, but if there are any other ideas i 
wouldn't mind hearing about them.
