[Cialug] Stopping X in ubuntu for a few minutes

Fresh install of Ubuntu LTS.
What is the best way to stop X for a few minutes to install the Nvidia
drivers?  If I kill gdm etc it starts back up.  If I use /etc/init.d/gdm
stop it also restarts.  Am I missing a process I should kill or is there a
general command to stop X?  If I go to runlevel one the drivers advise
against installing.
