Flash Memory and flash drives are to a point where you could boot from it at
the least and perhaps run the whole PC from it as long as you can
selectively choose your music, or more likely, your DVDs.  ;)

Newegg has samsung "flash drives" in standard small hard drive sizes (like
2.5") designed to replace notebook drives.  Not quite as cheap as CF cards
but economies of scale will probably step in.
