Corruption of settings in the .kde directory may (or may not) be a
sign of a larger issue.  Make sure they are backing up anything they
feel is "critical data" on a regular basis.

Even if the hardware turns out to be OK, it is a good idea to use this
small problem as incentive to encourage backing up.
