Mine is the a/b/g version and I used the live cd version of ubuntu. Could
that be the problem?

I'm using the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11 a/g with no issues on
the latest Ubuntu. It is using the ipw3945 module, and works fine.
Worked out of box for me.
