I have a Samsung personal laser (ML-2010) that came with Linux drivers
in the box. I didn't need them in Edgy, but I did in Dapper. It works
perfectly - power saving mode, manual feed - just works.

I've had several HPs that all worked as well. However, sometimes they
don't work when networked... for example, my current Office Jet (5500
series) hooked to a Windows computer is inaccessible to me over the
network. However, few companies support Linux as broadly as HP's
products.

I had a Lexmark Optra laser that worked perfectly as well.

Like Nathan said, getting postscript support built in is a safe way to
go. However, most printers need drivers if you want to do other stuff
like choose the paper tray and adjust settings. Also, Postscript can
cost a little extra.
