I have an hp 1020 laser jet and apc back-ups xs 1000, which aren't linux
compatible. I recently tried to install apc's powerchute software in wine
only to have the installer crash during the install. Since the ups and
printer are getting some age to them I figured I'd ask around before having
to replace old hardware when they do die.

I'd wager any "common" brand of UPS and just about any PCL or PS printer.
Did you mean inkjet or laser?
