[Cialug] Looking for some Ideas

In the winter I live in south Texas along the boarder.  My landlord 
wants to install some cameras.
My idea is to find an older computer and install Linux due to the solid 
nature of Linux.
I will have up to 6 local wired cameras and 4 remote 802.11 linked 
cameras.
We also want to be able to link into the system via the net from other 
locations.
They are on DSL E/W a router then into a D-Link 2700 802.11 router on 
the roof to provide wireless to all in the court.
Will this idea work?  And what will I need to make it work?
