When I first heard about J. D. Atanasoff (digital computer pre-ENIAC,
etc.), I thought, "Hey, that's Lawrence Pritchard Waterhouse!"

Any corroborating evidence that Neal Stephenson based that
_Cryptonomicon_ character on Atanasoff, other than that technical
similarity?
