[Cialug] two problems

I've installed unbuntu Warthog and I've found two problems:
    1. I negeleted to create a sudo account(root)
    2. I've installed a scanner on my machine --umax 3400-- and it is not being recognized.

I've ordered an upgrade, so item 1 might be moot. If anybody could advise, I would appreciate it.
