[Cialug] Soyo k7vme / VIA 8233 audio not working on Ubuntu 6.06

Even though you don't have a modem, I believe the VIA chipset has some
modem stuff built-in.  I believe this is for the AMR slot.  So
disabling the modem as Josh says may be what gets it working.  Just my
2 cents worth.
