I run OpenSuSE on all my machines at work and 3 of the 4 at home. I've put
it on a similar laptop, and it worked great. Pretty much everything "just
works". Mandriva is pretty nice too, I just think SuSE is more polished
and I like Yast. So, my vote would be for OpenSuSE 10 ;) If your in Des
Moines, and need Iso's, I have them if you want them. If you have cable,
that's probably not an issue though.
I have run Mandriva 2006 and Fedora Core 5, but I still prefer SuSE over
them both. Fedora Core 5 is really nice though ;) To be honest I tried
ubuntu when it came out and it didn't like some of my IBM hardware and
wouldn't play nice, so i've just stayed away from that and kubuntu
altogether, but some people really love it. As for Lindows, I wouldn't use
that if you gave me a 5 year subscription to it. I just dont' agree with
the way they have set it up to run by default... but that's another story
;)
Anymore it's getting harder and harder to find huge differences in
distros, it seems like alot of it is package management and updates and
control panels. SuSE does all of this very well imho.
