You could always get a creative player and get a free virus ;-)
The Mini now has a 4GB and a 6GB version. The 4GB is $199 and the 6GB
is $249.
For $299 you get a 20GB color screen model.
$129 is pretty nice, but it is for a "dead horse" disco'd model, and
a refurb at that.
iPods also, just kind of "show up" as Firewire or USB drives (though
they store the music in "hidden" files - iirc, just dir's w/ "." in
front. THere are also several good F/OSS iPod managers, and they play
mp3, wav and unprotected m4a files just fine.
Podcasting is really cool though. I also LOVE having audiobooks on a
nice big HD based player that can hold many novels w/o really trying
hard - much handier than CDs or tapes.
