We've got a Minolta that is pretty nice for portability, but
sucks for speed of boot and focus and so on.

CPU Magazine did a review of cameras not too long ago.  They
like the HP for speed and quality and so on in a non-SLR camera. 

For the larger format, they liked one of the Canons.  I've been
toying with the idea of getting one of these more old-school,
SLR-type cameras, but got some different hardware instead and
will have to wait a bit longer for the household budget karma to
build back up.
