If it is software raid then you shouldn't have any worries about the boot 
kernel supporting it.
 Only hardware raid the boot kernel needs the raid card module in order to 
even boot the OS.
I have always made my boot paritions whether hardware and software on Raid.
 You might look at the latest Fedora as it supposedly supports more SATA 
Raid chipsets
than previous versions.
