I bought a proxim Rangelan 8555 AP and Cisco 340 PCMCIA wireless card
on Ebay for a total of $25 between the 2 of them including shipping. I
couldn't be happier with the 340, it is supported in the kernel, and the
AP has worked fine for me so far. I see no interference from my 2.4 Ghz
phone even when it is in use unlike others I have known. I also have am
SMC 2635W card, but wouldn't recommend it do anyone, it has problems
dropping connections in the same situation that the 340 is rock solid.
It is worth a little extra to get a nic that is directly supported by a
current kernel as then you can install using wireless instead of cd or
wired.
On the subject, what do others use to config the connection between
different locations (set WEP key, mail server.....) I found whereami
after a bit of struggle and it is working great for me. It
automatically configures my network settings for the location and
connection I am using.
