When I was at Grinnell College, we just put them in a room in a physics
lab and ran a magnetism experiment.  You can also hit them with a Tesla
coil, but that takes longer.

Yeah, I know it doesn't answer your question, but it reminded me of the
fun I had in school, and I wanted to share.  :)
