In your case, however, I see a few issues that might be getting in the way. Just like they told you in that support doc from apple that you referenced, the usual procedure is two steps: 1) copy a custom icon from the 'get info' window 2) open the 'get info' window of the thumb drive, select the icon, and hit paste. That's it. <i>Usually</i>. </div><div><br></div><div>Your situation is different in three ways. </div><div><br></div><div>Firstly, there seems to be some general confusion about the difference between a preview icon and a custom icon. You might already know all this, but I'll state it for the benefit of the group. A preview icon is when the Finder looks at the contents of a file and creates an icon on the fly to 'preview' what the image looks like. This can be turned on and off in "View Options" (Command-J) in the Finder. The Finder will happily show you a preview icon for most graphics files, but it will not do this for a thumb drive. A custom icon is fixed (i.e. it doesn't depend on the contents of the file). What you want is a custom icon. What it sounds like you are doing, is copying the default PNG icon from your image file and pasting that as your thumb drive's icon. </div><div><br></div><div>Secondly, I see that the image that you want to use for your thumb drive's icon is in a PNG file. Most tutorial sites will tell you to use developer tools or a bit of freeware to create an icon from your custom image (check out <a href="http://img2icnsapp.com/">http://img2icnsapp.com/</a>). The easier way is just to open the image file - Preview will work fine for this - then 'select all' and 'copy'. Now that the image is on the pasteboard, you can open the get info box of your thumb drive, select the icon up at the top by the drive's name, and paste. Your mac will create the icon for you. </div><div><br></div><div>Lastly, and this is the kicker, you are doing this on a MS-DOS formatted thumb drive. That's OK too. Those are good for cross platform compatibility. The problem is that in my tests, only the first custom icon applied to this kind of drive works properly. Subsequent 'pasting' of icons don't seem to work. So, you'll need to reformat the drive before changing the icon. To do this, open up Disk Utility, select the thumb drive in the list of devices on the left, and go to the erase tab. Select MS-DOS (FAT) as the format, enter in a name and hit erase. Now when you paste in your custom icon, it should work. </div><div><br></div><div>Let me know how it goes!</div><div><br></div><div>-ßailey</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br><div><div>On Jan 22, 2010, at 3:19 PM, Matthew Nuzum wrote:</div><br class="Apple-interchange-newline"><blockquote type="cite"><div class="gmail_quote">Hi, I've read from several tutorials how to update the folder icon, for example this one here: <a href="http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2493" target="_blank">http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2493</a><br>
