Mine didn't have a password. I don't think you're looking at the cable modem. Or perhaps Mediacom has started securing them. Perhaps you can post a picture of the screen you see somewhere? Are there any graphics or company names such as Motorola or Linksys or DLink or Cisco or something? Or is it just a prompt for a password?

I had a situation once or twice where my cable connection was getting noisy and this impacted speed - the noise beyond a certain level caused too may transmission errors. They had to send someone out to fix it. Don't know if it was the box on our unit, or a neighborhood routing box or whatever. Another sign of the problem was that my cable TV connection was getting "snowy".

Not sure what cable modem you have, but mine is a "Motorola Surfboard". I have some notes on the last time I had a problem.

If you have a Moto Surfboard, try what they told me to do: Direct your web browser to http://192.168.100.1/ This is the cable modem's configuration and status screen.

I was told to click the "Signal" tab and that the signal-to-noise ratio should be in the high 30's or above. 20's is bad.

Another time it was just my cable modem going bad. They replaced it.
