Re: [DM-MUG] Digital Camera Compatibility

I recently bought a digital camera at Radio Shack (I know — big mistake, but it seemed like such a good deal ...). Got the camera home and plugged it into my iBook, and the camera came up on the desktop just like a hard drive or flash drive. Trouble was, the picture files were in a proprietary RAW format that Preview, Photoshop, and Jview didn’t recognize. Turns out you can only read the RAW images from the bundled software — for Windows only.

My advice: Bring your iBook into the store. Ask to take a couple pictures with a demo model of the camera. Plug it into the iBook. See whether you can OPEN the picture files (not just access them). If you can’t read the files, no go.

Been there, done that.

I’ve had good luck with the HP and Nikon digital cameras, and I would guess that Sony’s would probably be compatible too (their digital video cameras certainly are). Beyond that, TRY IT OUT in a “real world” test.

Peace,
I have another question. We are looking for a digital camera for our college age son. He doesn't care much about zoom. We think we have a good grasp on the megapixels. My question is this: are there any digital cameras that will not be compatible with his iBook? Are there any we should not consider? We want to stay under $200, preferably under $150 or thereabouts. He can buy a more expensive one when he's out of school. When I ask sales people about Mac compatibility no one seems to know much..... if anything.

Thanks for any guidance you might have.
