I contacted Mediacom on the cable modem thinking it could be that and everything looks great on that end. I then reboot the Extreme and it will work for about a hour or so and go right back dropping connections. I have never had any issues in the past and this just started about a month ago. I have a newer Mac Mini connected to it as well as a older MacBook and a three year old Windows XP box. Does it look like I will have to replace it? I do have the logs if anyone knows how to read that sort of stuff. I looked at them, but I am not well verse in the Mac aspects of networking, since my work only uses Windows and that is my bread and butter. Any advice would be great. Date: February 5, 2010 5:39:58 AM CST To: "Des Moines Macintosh Users Support Group" Reply-To: "Des Moines Mac Users Group" Good Morning, I have the last version of the Airport Extreme and I am having issues with the wireless connection just dropping off and after a few it will just connect and work for a while and then disconnect again. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <7800CEEA-AB72-4F58-BB86-E859EAF05238@gmail.com> You can change your DNS settings relatively easily. Check out the link below to find instructions on switching to Google's Public DNS: http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using.html You'll need to scroll down about a third of the way to the Mac OS X section. The directions at that link are applicable, even if you choose to go with a service other than Google's (e.g., OpenDNS). The only difference will be the numbers you enter. For the record, I did this a couple of weeks ago when Mediacom was having trouble (again) after discovering that connections which were already resolved (e.g., IM connections) were not affected by an apparent internet outage. Immediately, I was able to resume browsing normally. It should be noted, though, that this has not completely eliminated issues; Mediacom's network has been notably less reliable since their email "upgrade" around Christmas. Even with alternative DNS settings, I have experienced network slowdowns and outages ranging from a few minutes to a couple of hours. From what I've seen, though, Mediacom's consistent response to inquiries is either, "What problem?" or "We're working on it." All that said, when your network connection seems to fail, make sure to note the Airport signal strength indicator. If your Airport is good, even when the internet is not responding, you should still have normal signal strength. Jeremy R. You'll need to change the DNS settings on the base stn using the AirPort Utility (Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility). I changed my settings this morning and it does appear to have helped. Just goes to show that if you have trouble with your Mediacom service, whatever you do, don't call Mediacom tech support. Call or email me tomorrow if you still need help changing your settings. We should be able to walk you through it on the phone, or through iChat screen sharing. Then click to the network tab at the top, and you'll see two slots for DNS servers, about halfway down the window. In my case, these were already populated (but grayed out because the numbers are provided by Mediacom). I replaced them with the Google Public DNS IP addresses. Actually, this is probably the preferable way to roll this change across an entire network of computers and devices (e.g., iPhones, iPods Touches, etc.) because the change will be pushed to each of these devices the next time their DHCP leases are renewed. Also, you should be able to add the Google addresses (or OpenDNS, etc.) to your Network Preferences even with the 10.0.1.1 address. The system will check the first server and, if it receives no response, move to the second. The interesting thing here is that 10.0.1.1 would be a private address. So, unless you're running your own DNS server, it's probably just skipping past it anyway to the options provided to the Airport via its DHCP lease from Mediacom. Jeremy R. My problem was with the green button at the top of our windows. Apple calls this the 'zoom' button and it is supposed to resize the window to fit its contents. Clicking the 'zoom' button again returns the window to it's previous size. I've always hated this behavior (because the content changes requiring a new zoom and unzooming back to the original size seems counterintuitive). All I really want is something that will maximize the window to be as big as it can be on my screen. Even more infuriating to me is that on a Windows box, the same button does what I want - it maximizes the window. Windows 7 came out with a few new window tricks - including ways to easily make the window fill half the screen (this is handy for setting up windows to drag stuff from one place to another). Nothing could be worse than having Windoze envy, so I broke out the google and started testing fixes. There are a couple of solutions, but I think SizeWell is the best. It changes the behavior of that green 'zoom' button. By default, holding the shift key will turn the anemic 'zoom to fit' behavior into my desired 'maximize window'. In addition to this, there are keys that will tell the window to fill the right half, left half, top half, or bottom half of the screen. If you like, SizeWell also changes the way that resizing tab in the lower right corner of the window works. By holding down modifier keys, you can resize while retaining the window's height or width, or it's aspect ratio. You can resize the window so that it becomes centered on the screen or you can even resize the window by keeping the lower right corner fixed instead of the upper left corner fixed (this seems like a weird feature to me, but hey). It also has a 'blacklist' feature to ignore any software with which SizeWell conflicts. Oh, and it's free. If your appetite is whetted for some finely tuned window manipulation, you'll just need to install two things - SIMBL and SizeWell. SIMBL stands for simple bundle loader and it's a way to add code to software. This gave me serious reservations because similar ideas have historically been very buggy. After reading up on it, and using it for a month, I'm please to report 0 compatibility errors or crashes and the reviews back this up. SizeWell itself, looks like a Preference Pane when it's installed. SIMBL can be found here: http://www.culater.net/software/SIMBL/SIMBL.php SizeWell is here: http://www.randomapplications.com/extras/sizewell/ Cheers and happy Macin' -bailey -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Is that because the maker did not create to fit all screens? Or do I have to do something to fit it to my screen? Also. On some systems Chrome is an awesome choice, for example on my netbook where it is really really quick and the minimal interface helps me put every pixel to use. On my more recent MBP with a nice big screen and very quick processor i've not felt the benefits as much. http://www.google.com/chrome -- Matthew Nuzum newz2000 on freenode, skype, linkedin, identi.ca and twitter -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
