If I recall correctly you can buy a mini DVI to DVI or to VGA cable. It doesn't have to be apple brand. Since you have 2 external monitors with different connectors it's not going to be as easy as you want. Cabletogo.com may have a solution. I don't think anywhere in Iowa will have anything that helps. If they were both VGA you could buy a KVM switch. a VGA Y-cable/splitter (or called VGA 2-way splitter) was about $129-$300 and this was a few years ago.

If this was a normal desktop computer, all you would have to do is add a second graphics video card with the appropriate port and hook it up. I'm getting rusty on the specs for Apple laptops... but if your laptop has both a standard VGA AND a mini DVI you can achieve your goal. If your laptop has a standard DVI AND a mini DVI then you can achieve your goal. if your laptop ONLY has the mini DVI then you need search the internet for a 2 or 3 way splitter. 

Lowendmac.com is a good resource I like to use. It might be of some help.

I have a PC laptop that will let me close the laptop, but still display what I want on the external monitor as long as I have my standby function and some of my power settings adjusted. However, I have to make sure I sleep/hibernate/power down my laptop prior to connecting any external monitor.

You purchase the mini DVI to DVI cable. then you purchase a 2 way DVI cable from the internet (looks like a Y cable) then. one part goes to MBP, one goes to the DVI monitor. Then the third connects to a DVI to VGA cable. The VGA portion connects to the VGA monitor. 

So you have the following chain
MBP with one miniDVI >> mini DVI to DVI cable >> 2 way DVI cable 

the 'legs' of the 2 way DVI cable (shouldn't matter which leg goes where)
1 leg goes to the DVI monitor
1 leg connects to the DVI to VGA cable >> VGA Monitor.

You may want to get a second opinion. You could easily spend about $200 or more in cables. There are external graphic cards (they really look similar to switch modules for TVs. These devices are small, easy to use, but the quality isn't much since they connect to your computer via USB or Firewire. Personally I really wouldn't invest in trying to connect to VGA unless it's an absolute daily need. 

DVI and VGA have different resolutions... One is digital info and the other converts digital info into analog signal (VGA) so a setting on one monitor may not look as good on the other.

Hello, usually normal "sleep" mode is fine but sometimes I would
prefer to use hibernate. For example, when I'm getting ready to fly it
would be nice to use hibernate so that I'm not slowly wearing my
battery down while I'm waiting in the airport, boarding or taking off.
Likewise I'd rather not shut down completely - that way I can have
some web-pages open to read on the plane and I don't have to waste
time waiting for my applications to load.

I see that if I suspend my laptop and the battery wears completely
down it will hibernate so that I don't loose work, I'd just like to
have a command to do this outright in those rare occasions where I
need to suspend for longer periods of time.

We live in the country near Adel and have had Prairieinet.net for 6  
years.  It has worked very well for a broadband set up, it was our  
only choice at the time (besides dial up) and the service has been  
excellent.  However, we can only download at at 896 kb/s and that just  
seems slow when compared to Qwest @1.5 MS/s for $10.00 less a month.   
At this time we can access Qwest so there is a choice.

Thoughts?  Ideas?

Switching to qwest is give-and-take.  For one, dsl loses transmit speed 
the further you are away from the local switch, so when they say 
"1.5Mbps download", they mean "1.5Mbps download *max*".  They seem to do 
a pretty good job of getting pretty close to the 1.5Mbps max number, 
though.  If you want that extra 700Kbps, just realize that you are 
giving up the ability to speak with someone from the United States if 
you have a problem.  I've had to talk with someone in India 3-5 times to 
get a problem fixed every time I've had a problem.  They always tell you 
to clear your browser cache, which does pretty much nothing (if I was 
having problems that seemed browser-cache related, I would have done 
that long before calling, but they assume that every customer is a 
driveling idiot).

All-in-all, when qwest is working, I'm perfectly happy with it.  When 
it's not, there's no point in calling tech support.  You can call the 
local office and punch buttons until you're actually talking to someone 
near here to get some reasonable help or report an outage, but 
apparently you can't tell tech support anything useful, because they 
have no way to report to the local techies that something is wrong.

As a field service tech for HR Block, I've installed over 25 Qwest DSL's in the Des Moines area. ?Because we bridged all the Qwest Modems, I've has to call and work with a Qwest tech support person every time. ?90% of the time I've called, I've spoken to a fairly nice, polite person. ?Now that's not to say that they've been technically savvy ?but they have all been located in the US and have helped us bridge the MODEM. ?The fact is that we have been moving away from other DSL carriers towards Qwest and I have been happy to change over. ?I can give you on example of why. ?At one of our locations we were unable to get a Qwest DSL line until this a few weeks ago. ?Last season the DSL in that office went off because of a power failure. ?The office was without power for more than 4 hours. ?After the power came on we couldn't get the DSL to work. ?After hours of trying to find the problem, we discovered that the provider (not Qwest) had to actually restart the DSL on their end. ?I've never heard of that problem from Qwest. ?The provider stated that this would happen every time the DSL was off-line for more than 4 hours. ?I immediately decided to try to switch to Qwest. ?(Since we switched providers in that office, the DSL speeds have more than doubled.)

I'm not a Qwest representative and I personally use Iowa Telecom at home but I did want to put in some of my own experience. ?We chose Iowa Telecom because it was less expensive at the time we were looking for DSL. ?Since we've been hooked up our DSL/phones rates have crept up to about where the Qwest levels were.

I'd say my experience with Qwest has been has been a good one over-all. ?

Hi,

My wife recently received an LG 600G phone which has a camera and  
Bluetooth. I turned on Bluetooth in both the camera and the computer  
and got them paired and connected to download a photo. Now I am trying  
to send some more pictures from the phone to the computer but neither  
one of them can connect to the other. The firewall has Bluetooth  
sharing enabled. Both the computer and the phone have visibility  
turned on. I am running OS 10.5.7.

I have the same phone. Using 10.4 on an iMac. I got it to work but
took several tries and I still don't know for sure what I did. Seemed
to be a bit unpredictable.

Just be aware that Apple does not support unlocking/jailbreaking the iPhone,
and does everything in its power to discourage it. This means:
? You won't be able to get help from Apple if you have trouble with the
iPhone or its OS
? If the iPhone has any warranty left, unlocking/jailbreaking will void it
? Any iPhone OS or firmware updates will likely undo the unlock/jailbreak,
and may in fact render the iPhone inopreative or "bricked"

I don't have an iPhone myself, and haven't tried unlocking/jailbreaking one.
I'm not necessarily saying you shouldn't do it, but it's very important that
you know the risks before you proceed.

In my opinion, it is irresponsible of an ISP to recommend
unlocking/jailbreaking an iPhone, especially if they're not sure of your
level of technical expertise. If you're not comfortable doing the
unlock/jailbreak yourself, or re-doing or un-doing it as necessary, you
shouldn't go down this road.

How can your iSP give you phone service. Are they talking about wi fi  
access? Or putting in a new sim card? I've read about people doing  
verizon on iphones with some success.  They purchase the phone with  
ATT contract, cancel after one month and pay the $175 early  
cancellation charge. My wife and daughter can use any hot spot with  
the ipod touch. I am looking for a way of adding a microphone and  
doing skype on the touch. Good luck. Can you let us know how it works.

This is kind of par for course w/ bluetooth. The common technique is to
disaccociate and then reconnect. I had to do this a couple times with it
working sometimes and not others then it started working consistently (mine
even shows up as a modem and I can connect to the internet).

Click the bluetooth icon in the upper bar, presumably your device is listed
there. Don't click it, insted click bluetooth preferences. Click once on the
name of your phone and then hit the minus sign at the bottom left corner of
the window. Then hit the plus sign and re-add it.

For some mysterious reason you just have to do this once in a while. As I
mentioned, after a few tries finally mine has a good connection and I
haven't had to re-do it. And if it makes you feel better, I've had to do
this on every operating system, not just Mac OS.

Personally I don't understand why the phone doesn't show up as a mounted
drive that I can just browse w/ finder. (it does if I use USB instead of
bluetooth) But again, this is not just a mac thing... in Windows and Ubuntu
I also have to use the "browse device" feature to look at it through a
special window.

I'm afraid I need to bump that deadline up, since I'll be traveling w/  
limited internet access starting the 24th. I've received a check for  
$8 and $15 cash locally.

So far that's a total of $33

The renewal price is (rounded up to an even dollar) $11 / year.
So, we have 3 years worth of renewal so far.
It's set to auto-renew for 2 years anyway, so even if it slips a bit  
we'll be OK for a minimum of 2 years.

Let's say wednesday 7:00pm at this point. If you've sent something in  
but don't expect it to reach Victoria by wednesday, let us know  
(either on list or privately) how much it was. I'll make the renewal  
happen on Wed night after 7.

Sorry to rush things, but it occurred to me that I won't be able to do  
much after the deadline mentioned here until after I'm back (which is

I know how many years to go for.

cut a check to Bryan on Thursday.

If we have more than 4-5 years we could keep adding to the amount and 
use it for munchies at the next meeting or whatever.  It's in my 
trust account and safe there.

OK, done.
Turns out I had a 10% coupon from them, so we got a bit better rate.  
We have a bit over 10 left.
They wouldn't renew past 9 years. Our domain is now secured for the  
next 9 years.

Victoria: I already got $15 in cash. I have an $8 check that came to  
my address made out to dmmug, so I'll get that to you (maybe via CW?)  
you can deposit that in the trust acct. and I just need  the $82.44  
minus 15. ($67.44). Make sense?

We are working on the upcoming meeting schedule.  You may recall that 
we hold meetings the 4th Tuesday of each month at Impromptu Studio 
downtown.  [http://www.dmmug.org/  for details]  We're trying to put 
together some program topics but have some Q.  We could do a Survey 
Monkey but maybe this is just as well discussed here.

I'll protect your identity]

Why do you or would you come to meetings?  Social interaction, 
learning something, getting out of the house, marketing and 
self-promotion, getting to know your Mac, being able to win and take 
home raffle prizes [even better ones on their way!] etc.  We'd like 
to know all the reasons.

Any thoughts on topics?  General ones?  We have talked about general 
topics around which we could program:  security, maintenance, photos, 
music etc.  What do YOU think?

We'd like to improve the head count at meetings.  What would help with that???

For what it's worth.  I do long distance motorcycle touring and I  
have a unit in my helmet w/microphone that links to my cell phone w/ 
bluetooth.  Every time I step away from the bike and leave my hemet  
there the Bluetooth disconnects, sometimes........ not always.  I  
know there's a "grace" period when it goes standby but it's not  
consistent.  Oh well, no big deal as my phone beeps at me and wants  
to know if I would like to reconnect, but not always :)

Just my .02 but in actuality it's only .01 at the moment.

I downloaded a fix from Microsoft Office and got a message saying that I had two copies of it, which one did I want to update. When I ran a search to try to find the second copy, nothing showed up directly, but I finally found that there is a COPY of the applications folder that is inside the applications folder. I have no idea how that folder got there, but I'm assuming that is where the second copy is. I tried to put it into the trash but it says that it is locked. Can anyone tell me how to remove it?

Also, I found this in the search: Application data. When I opened it is said: mysterystudio, then Sherlock, then Sherlock log sept
2008. Can I safely throw this away?

I'm surprised to have gotten responses to this (got another privately)...I just assumed that the folks on a computer group wouldn't be interested in the details or that it would be considered off-topic, even if your advice during the long writing process was useful. The book is:

The books are available through Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Authorhouse (look-inside coming soon) or directly through me, for $14.95 plus $3.50 shipping. It is also available as an ebook on the Authorhouse website. My under-construction website is www.freshfoodsings.com, where both the paperback and the ebook will be available sometime in the future, hopefully soon. Other bookstores will carry it but it generally takes a couple of months to get them on the shelves.

Reviewers have been very positive (although reviews are not yet posted) as it is a funny, practical and well-written book.

Thanks again for asking. Half the fun is being able to share the info with friends and to feel proud that I actually, finally, got one of my books in print. Whether it is 3rd party or self-published, is a big deal to get a book published because there is SOOOOO much work involved. But I did it because my belief that the economy is going to crash has given me the determination to do things that I might otherwise lack the courage or motivation to do. The result, even with some mistakes scattered through it, is something that has been bringing me a lot of satisfaction just because I did it. Being disabled, I did it working mostly from a hospital bed where I have my computer hooked up to a 32" TV and use a separate keyboard on my lap, and where I survived a serious computer crash in which I lost large sections of another book. (Whatever caused the crash, it was so bad that even the back up drive had to be erased. But the cookbook was okay.)  

This was probably a lot more info than you wanted, but thanks so much for asking and letting me share about my accomplishment.
