[DM-MUG] Used iPods

Thanks, I had never thought of having it engraved.  My wife has a 30G video and my daughter has a 4G Nano.  I'm in 3 different contemporary bands right now and like to listen to a lot of books on audio and music.  I'm sure that I would use the iPod more than both of them combined (my daughter doesn't like me using hers and my wife takes hers to work).  I'm the main Mac person in charge of  getting audio to their iPods so I think it's about time I got one of these little gadgets for myself.  Any other thoughts about used iPods would be appreciated.  (Why don't I buy a new one?  Our family's already bought two new ones and I don't mind taking a chance.)  What I would rather have is an iPod with 32GB non volatile RAM (not on a harddrive).  But I am not will to plunk down $400+ on it.  So, I'll make do with a used 30GB or so iPod.

The flip side of that is that if an engraved one goes bad, you have to
wait for an engraved replacement, or take a non-engraved replacement
and loose the engraving.

My initial 40GB 4G was engraved (my wife got it for my BD that year)
with my name.

It died, under Applecare/Warranty and I wanted to keep it engraved, so
had to go through the whole exchange dance. THat one failed similarly
(there seems to have been a bad batch of those 40GB models) I was
loathe to go thorough the 3 week ordeal again, so this time I just
took it to the Apple store and had them exchange it for a plain one
that is still ticking (even after it being gnawed through it's case by
our over-eager Labrador) I'm well out of coverage now, but I'm glad I
finally decided to stop getting it engraved. It's funny you mention
the warranty since the Apple store said they suggested taking them
down to "Things Remembered" when this was going on.

Don't know if I'd ever engrave a phone # or address on one - between
that and the info on the pod it could be a good way to get more stuff
ripped off. Thief looks at the back, notes name/phone, looks through
contacts for same name (probably w/ nice "Me" tag) and gets address
from that, then looks at calendar for appointments, or better yet
vacation...

Joel's got me thinking paranoid.

fwiw: recording the serial number does about as much good as having
the back engraved as far as I can see.

My wife's has never gone bad though, so she still has the engraving I
had done for her.
