 >>	Start your TWAIN-compliant application software.

The software you are using to talk to the scanner MUST support  
TWAIN.   Which is an open standard used to talk to imaging hardware.

The Apple article

implies that if your scanner does NOT come with "scanning" software,  
you can use Apple's Image Capture application to do it, after you have  
the TWAIN drive installed.
