You would need to format it with FAT, not the native Mac file system. I had the same problem before. When I reformatted it for FAT, it worked very well.

Usually, they are already formatted for FAT.

That's a great idea but I had trouble once relying on it == I had 
formatted the drive for use in my Mac [probably to clean off old data 
just did the usual] and took stuff to a PC friend who couldn't get it 
to work in her PC.  Never tried that again.
