A followup. By "install Mac OS 9" I don't mean you have to BOOT Mac OS 9
(although that's a possibility too, on some machines). No, what I mean is
that you can run OS 9 and OS X apps simulataneously. Sort of like how
Parallels or VMWare lets you run Mac OS X and Windows apps at the same time,
even with interleaved Windows (Parallels calls it Coherence, I forget what
VMWare calls it).
And bear in mind that this doesn't mean that you can run all Mac OS apps
since the beginning of time. 680x0 processor apps especially may not
work. Though there are emulator for just 680x0 Macs out there too.
