Copy all the files from the external drive to your iMac. Then format  
the external, and clone the entire iMac's hard drive to it. Put the  
cloning on a daily schedule. From that point onward, don't store  
anything on the external drive manually. Keep saving to the iMac's  
drive only and let the daily cloning create the backup.
