Some (I think many or even most) computers can change their MAC
address (often written in all caps since its an abbreviation and to
avoid confusion with Mac computers). If you want extra security it's a
good feature to enable along with your password. If you just want a
little security then you can use it instead of passwords. I personally
value my network security too much to rely on this technique alone.
Some routers are configurable and allow you to assign specific IP
addresses to different MAC addresses. In the past I've done this and
put unknown computers into different network subnets. I know of one
person who took this a step further and sent these unknown computers
through a proxy that turned all of the images upside down.
