[DM-MUG] iTunes

The hard drive on my iMac is bulging at its seams, a virtual Calcutta, 
if you will. I've moved a number of files to an external drive (a 
virtual Wyoming) but that's only been of marginal help. What I've just 
discovered is that by far, the largest chunk of my hd is taken up by my 
iTunes Music folder. Something like 56.33 GB of the formatted 74 GBs is 
my audio collection.

What I'm wondering is, if I move some of the individual folders (which 
correspond to the artist's names) to the external drive, will iTunes 
find them and be able to play them or update them, if needed? Or will I 
need to move out the least needed ones and swap them back in if I want 
to hear them? Or would I have to move the whole kit & kaboodle, 
application & files, over to the external drive? Or something else?!!!

And how would any of this affect interactions with my iPod (an old 30 
GB), which is already a considerably slimmed-down version of the iTunes 
library?
