I have been using VNC (Virtual Network Computing) for several years.
There are 2 parts:
1) Server: This is the part that runs on the computer whose screen
you want to share
A good and free server can be found at Redstone Software
http://www.redstonesoftware.com/products/vine/server/vineosx/index.html
They even have versions for OS 9 which I have successfully running on
an old Power Computing machine (Mac clone) using Mac OS 8.6.
2) Client: This is the application that allows to to connect and use
another machine.
The one I use is "Chicken of the VNC", it is also free.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/
The are security issues if you are sharing your Mac on the internet.
I am currently only using it to monitor machine on my local network
but it can be used for much more than that.
There are VNC servers for every OS.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vnc for more information on VNC itself.
