first, I assume you have a harddrive and are backing up and cloning
it so that if something goes wrong you are able to recover what you
need/want. If not, that would be the lst step, having an adequate
backup drive. And to have that a bootable clone.

Then you need to decide what type of install to do = I used the Take
Control eBook on upgrading to Leopard, an excellent expenditure of
$10 [I think] which walked me thru the process and explained it to me
easily. ANd well.

The writer of that book advocates Erase/Install but if that is not
feasible, ARchive/Install is a good option. But in either case,
doing a safety clone backup is essential [I did two]. Erase will
clean off the whole drive and Install will put on a fresh new Leopard
system == then you use Setup/Migration assistant to move back stuff
from the cloned backup -- so NO you do not need to reinstall all the
apps etc == some you will, some you will need to find drivers for
etc. and some you will need to put in the license numbers again.

So far all my apps work but I haven't put them all through their paces yet.

I really think with all your Q you would be wise to get the
TAkeControl book and read it and then walk thru the steps =- it
answers all your questions and anticipate some as well. It explains
all the things you should do before you even start to do an
upgrade/install...and having carefully taken those steps things seem
to go fine for me now.
